Groundhog Day Craft for Kindergarten - Sharing Kindergarten (2024)

Groundhog Day Craft for Kindergarten: Ah, Groundhog Day – that quirky and charming tradition where we eagerly await the emergence of Punxsutawney Phil to predict the end of winter. While the science behind Phil’s weather forecasting abilities may be questionable, the excitement and anticipation that surround Groundhog Day are undeniably contagious, especially in a preschool or kindergarten setting. In this blog post, we’re about to embark on a crafty adventure that combines the joy of creating with the educational spirit of Groundhog Day. This is a great craft for preschool and kindergarten Groundhog Day activities.

Simple Circle Groundhog Day Craft for Kindergarten

Materials Needed for this craft are very simple and you should be able to find these items in most classrooms. Items include brown, black, pink, and white construction paper, scissors, and glue. You may choose to use markers for details in place of some black circles. I highly suggest prepping much of this with a variety of circle punches. We use this pack and it makes the job easy peasy.

Groundhog Day Craft for Kindergarten Instructions

Prep this craft by tracing a circle on paper for your groundhog head. Make a circle about the size of an adult hand so that it can be used for the fun Groundhog Graph show later in this post. Now, if you want to use this Groundhog Craft for Preschool, you may want to precut the groundhog head.

Additionally, this groundhog craft for Kindergarten is super simple if the teacher uses circle hole punches to prep brown circles for ears, nose, and hands, white for eyes, pink for the inside of ears, and black for the inside of eyes. Pre-cutting the teeth is also PRECIOUS.

We love to place this out for students to grab and glue with as much independence as they can handle.

Groundhog Day Craft for Kindergarten Assembly

To assemble this Groundhog Day craft for Kindergarten, start with the large brown circle as the head.

1. Layer the PINK circles inside two BROWN circles. Tuck them in behind the top of the head and secure them with glue.

2. Add two BROWN circles to the bottom. Glue them down in the front. Add black marks to make it look like hands.

3. Next, add BLACK smaller circles inside two WHITE circles. These are the eyes. Place them on the face of the groundhog. Test their location before you glue them down.

4. Finally, add one BLACK circle to the back of two BROWN circles to make a cute little nose. Glue this collection down below the eyes.

5. Add two teeth under the nose to make a hidden mouth.

Voila – you’ve got a charming groundhog ready to predict the weather!

Predict With The Groundhog Day Craft

One of the main reasons to make this craft about the size of your hand is so that your students can use this CUTE groundhog craft to help predict the groundhog. We prep a colorful graph ahead of time and pose a simple question: I predict the groundhog will/will not see his shadow. This graph is made with door paper and die die-cut machine.

Students add their groundhog to the side to cast their vote in this prediction game. Finally, on Groundhog Day, we can see if we predicted correctly or not.

Expanding Sentences with Describing Words

Can I throw out there one more fun activity idea? To enhance language development, encourage your young learners to expand their sentences by incorporating describing words. Start with basic sentences like those shown in the picture. I try to integrate high-frequency words we are currently working on so we can cover more with less time.

When preparing this activity, start with basic sentences. Then, add a blank space before the word groundhog. This is the place we will be adding the describing words. Next, grab some die cuts to hold the describing words. We have suns and clouds, which was a perfect fit. Use what options you have available to you.

To use this activity, read the sentence with your students. Next, have them add a describing word to the groundhog. Re-read the sentence with that describing word inside it, using tone and expression to help highlight how the describing words can change the sentence.
