Magnolia Bakery may be known for its different cupcakes and cakes, but many people agree that Magnolia Bakery banana pudding is the best product sold in the bakery. It’s certainly up there as one of my favorite banana desserts.

What makes this recipe so special?
If you’ve ever been to New York, the chances are you’ve probably tried their banana pudding and know that it’s the real deal. The bakery has locations in Chicago and LA as well, but if you live a long way from these locations, you probably can’t enjoy their one-of-a-kind banana pudding as often as you want.
Of course, you can have it delivered to your door, but it’ll cost you a lot. Luckily, Magnolia Bakery has released the original recipe for its famous banana pudding, so you can now make it in your own home for way less money.
And don’t worry about the ingredients. They are quite simple so you can find them easily.
Wouldn’t it be great if you can gather your family or friends so you can all enjoy this creamy goodness together?
Here’s everything you need to know to make homemade Magnolia Bakery banana pudding that tastes just as good as the original.
How to Make Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding
This simple recipe uses basic ingredients: vanilla wafers, instant pudding mix, sweetened condensed milk, bananas, and heavy cream. To prepare, just mix, layer, and chill. It’s essential to refrigerate the pudding for 4-8 hours before serving. This allows the flavors to meld together and the pudding to achieve the right consistency.
To prevent the bananas from browning, use slightly green bananas and consider brushing them with citrus juice or rinsing with club soda. For the best flavor and texture, avoid low-fat or low-sugar substitutes and stick to the full-fat versions of cream and other ingredients. If topping with fresh banana slices, add them just before serving to maintain freshness.
Ingredients
- Ice Cold Water: Combined with sweetened condensed milk to form the base of the pudding.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk: Mixed with water and pudding mix to create a rich, sweet base.
- Heavy Cream: Whipped to stiff peaks and folded into the pudding mixture to add creaminess and lightness.
- Vanilla Instant Pudding Mix: Provides the pudding flavor and helps in thickening the mixture.
- Nilla Wafers: Used to create layers in the pudding, adding a sweet, crunchy texture.
- Banana Slices: Layered within the pudding for their classic flavor and texture.

If you’ve ever been to Magnolia bakery, it’s highly likely you’ve bought their banana pudding. Bring the taste of Magnolia into your kitchen today.
Ingredients
1 1/2 cups 1 1/2 of ice cold water
1 can 1 sweetened condensed milk, (14 oz.)
3 cups 3 heavy cream
1 box vanilla instant pudding mix (3.4 oz.)
1 box Nilla Wafers, (12 oz.)
4 cups 4 banana slices
Directions
- Beat together the water and condensed milk in a large bowl for two minutes to make sure they are well combined.
- Stir in the pudding mix and continue beating for two more minutes.
- Cover and store it in the fridge for at least three to four hours to let the pudding set. Otherwise, it can become watery.
- Whip the heavy cream in a large bowl until it makes stiff peaks. Carefully fold the whipped cream into the pudding mixture.
- You can make the dessert in a large glass bowl, 9×13 baking pan, or in individual portions using fancy glasses, paper containers, or china cups. The options are endless. If you don’t want to spend time making it in separate containers, use a large baking pan or glass bowl.
- Cover the bottom of the container with 1/3 of the NIlla wafers, and don’t worry if they overlap.
- Spread a layer of banana slices which should be 1/3 of the whole amount.
- Layer 1/3 of the pudding mixture.
- Do this twice more until there’s no more NIlla wafers, bananas, and pudding mixture.
- Cover tightly and garnish with wafer crumbs or additional wafers on top.
- Store it in the fridge for 4 to 8 hours to let the pudding set.
- If you like to garnish with banana slices, wait to add them right before serving.
- Enjoy.

Tips & Tricks
- Quality of Ingredients: Opt for high-quality vanilla wafers and a reputable brand of instant vanilla pudding mix. The better the quality, the more delicious and authentic your pudding will taste.
- Banana Ripeness: Select bananas that are ripe yet firm. This ensures the right balance of sweetness and texture. Overripe bananas can be too mushy, affecting the pudding’s consistency.
- Whipping the Cream: Whip the heavy cream to stiff peaks, but be cautious not to overdo it. Perfectly whipped cream should be smooth and voluminous, which contributes to the light and creamy texture of the pudding.
- Layering Technique: Pay attention to how you layer the wafers, bananas, and pudding. Aim for even layers to ensure that each bite has a harmonious blend of flavors and textures.
- Chilling Time: Although the minimum chilling time is 4 hours, letting the pudding chill overnight can significantly enhance its flavor and texture. The extended chilling allows the wafers to soften perfectly and the flavors to meld together beautifully.
Can You Make Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding Ahead of Time?
Not only that you can make it ahead of time, but you need to make it ahead of time. The pudding mixture needs to spend some time in the fridge so that it can thicken properly.
Therefore, you can start making the dessert one or two nights before you plan to consume it, or in the morning and serve it in the evening. However, the assembly of the banana pudding shouldn’t be done more than 8 hours in advance.
As soon as your homemade dessert is assembled with the NIlla wafers, you can eat it within four to eight hours. The reason why it needs to stay at least 4 hours in the fridge is to get the right texture and firmness, and to soften the Nilla Wafers.
If it stays longer than 8 hours, it can become soggy and the bananas can turn brown.
Conclusion
Is there a person who doesn’t like Magnolia Bakery banana pudding? Yes, only the ones that still haven’t got a chance to go to New York or the few other locations of the bakery and order this heavenly dessert.
Luckily, the bakery has shared the original recipe for its popular banana pudding so that everyone can make it in their own homes no matter where they live. The recipe requires simple and inexpensive ingredients, and the preparation is easy, so nothing is really stopping you from making this dessert today.
Gather your family or friends and give them one of the best creamy desserts they have ever tried. We’re sure they will love it just like anyone else that has tried Magnolia Bakery banana pudding.

I have never used sweetened condensed milk but I might try it. I do however always use regular pudding instead of instant. My grandmother made excellent pudding.

This recipe is amazing but I was not able to get my heavy whipping cream to whip. So I was going to use Cool Whip is that OK and how much can I use?
