Somali Pirates Attack LNG Tanker! Cape-bound Ship Escapes Hijacking (2025)

Piracy is back in the headlines, and this time, it's not just a distant threat. A Cape-bound petrol tanker is still under siege by pirates, sparking fresh concerns about the safety of global shipping lanes.

This worrying situation unfolds off the coast of Somalia, specifically near Mogadishu's old Italian harbor. Recent events suggest a resurgence of piracy after a period of relative calm, raising alarms for those who rely on the vital flow of goods and energy across the seas.

On Friday, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker narrowly escaped an attack. Maritime security sources reported that the vessel, identified as the Marshall Islands-flagged Al Thumama, was approached by a small craft carrying three individuals. Fortunately, the tanker, en route from Qatar to Poland via the Cape of Good Hope, managed to outrun the attackers.

But here's where it gets controversial: just the day before, another tanker, the Malta-flagged Hellas Aphrodite, was targeted. While the crew took refuge in a safe room and retained control, the pirates remained on board as of Friday. The European Union's naval force dispatched a warship to the area, a clear indication of the seriousness of the situation.

For years, Somali pirates were a major threat, particularly in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean. However, a coordinated crackdown by Western naval forces and military actions had largely suppressed their activities. Now, with the resurgence of these attacks, the question is: what's changed?

More recently, the Iran-affiliated Houthi militia in Yemen has posed a significant threat to shipping through the Red Sea, leading many vessels to divert their routes. This shift has pushed traffic south along the East African coast, creating new opportunities for Somali pirate gangs.

The Hellas Aphrodite was carrying petrol to South Africa when it was attacked. This incident, along with the attempted attack on the LNG tanker, underscores the potential for disruption to critical supply chains.

What do you think? Are we witnessing a temporary spike in piracy, or is this the beginning of a more sustained threat? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
