When it comes to weekend breakfasts, one of our favorites around here is pancakes. It’s hard to beat a nice fluffy pancake that’s golden on the outside and tender inside. With lots of syrup of course!

While it’s super easy to grab a box of store-bought pancake mix, add in an ingredient or two and cook – it’s just as easy to have your own HOMEMADE pancakes on the weekend.

All you need is a little preparation ahead of time ONCE to whip up a batch of this homemade pancake mix recipe to give you a bunch of weekends of easy-to-make pancakes!

This pancake mix recipe uses only 5 ingredients and will take you less than 5 minutes to mix together.

Once you do, you’ll have six batches of pancake mix to use whenever you’re ready to cook them.

The recipe below makes 6 cups of mix, but you can double or triple the recipe and save yourself some time in the long run.

When it comes time to making the pancakes, all you do is add an egg and a cup of milk to one cup of your homemade mix.

Then you can say that you always make your own pancakes from scratch. Look at you, all home-cooky and all!

You can also use the mix to make lots of other pancake variations. Here are three of my favorites:

Strawberry Pancakes with Cream Cheese Glaze are perfect for weekend brunch, Mother’s Day or any special breakfast. The recipe shows how to make the pancakes from scratch, but starting with your newly made mix is easier.

How to Store Homemade Pancake Mix:

To store the mix, you can put it in any airtight container. I love the Rubbermaid Brilliance storage containers because they lock super well.

Another option is to store in it Mason jars. You can even get big half gallon Mason jars that look really cool sitting on your kitchen counter.

If you decide to make a huge batch of mix, you can even put it in freezer bags and store it in the freezer for up to two years.

Another awesome option is to make the pancake mix as a GIFT IDEA! Mix up the mix and put it in Mason jars or glass jars with a wire clamp and tie each with a bow made of colorful ribbon.

To take your gift to the next level, we made these labels including the simple instructions for your gift recipient to make their pancakes. You can print the Homemade Pancake Mix labels HERE.

I like to print them out on label paper and stick right to the jar, but you could also print on plain paper and glue to the front, or print on heavyweight paper, punch a hole in the corner and attach to the jar with a piece of ribbon or bakers twine.

FAQs

What can I use if I run out of pancake mix? ›

If you run out of pancake mix, you can make pancakes at home with just a few simple ingredients: flour, baking powder, salt, and a bit of sugar. Once you mix those dry ingredients, you'll add the milk, an egg, and butter to create a terrific pancake batter.

What is pancake batter made of? ›

Made with ingredients I always have hand—like flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, milk, eggs, and butter—the pancakes have the perfect texture: fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside. While they're delicious on their own, you can customize them with your favorite add-ins.

What are the ingredients in no name old fashioned pancake mix? ›

Ingredients: Enriched Wheat Flour, Yellow Corn Flour, Sugars (dextrose, sugar), Modified Corn Starch, Monocalcium Phosphate, Rice Flour, Bakingsoda, Potassium Chloride, Salt, Guar Gum.

Can I substitute flour for pancake mix? ›

Measurement Adjustment: When substituting pancake mix for flour, you need to adjust the measurements. For every cup of flour required in the recipe, reduce it by 2.5 tablespoons to account for the leavening agents and sugar already present in the pancake mix [3].

Should I use milk instead of water in pancake mix? ›

Can you use milk instead of water for pancakes? You sure can! Instead of water, you can use any kind of milk, including almond milk and coconut milk, to mix up the pancake batter.

Why do my homemade pancakes fall apart? ›

Overbeating can add too much additional air and/or large air bubbles which the cake can't support, causing it to collapse in the oven. Beat your butter and sugar gradually at medium to medium-high speed. Don't beat too aggressively; creaming can't be rushed, as the air needs to be incorporated gradually.

Is it cheaper to buy pancake mix or make your own? ›

It's easy to find boxed pancake mix on sale for just a few dollars. So, if you use organic flour and organic sugar, your homemade pancake mix will cost you more. However, if you buy flour, sugar, baking soda, and baking powder in bulk, the cost per pancake is cheaper than a boxed mix.

Is it better to mix pancakes wet into dry or dry into wet? ›

Mixing the dry ingredients into the wet was far more successful. Following this order made for a more supple dough that was easier to combine thoroughly without overmixing (which can overdevelop gluten), so it turned out more delicate, finely textured results. It also made cleanup easier.

What is Korean pancake mix made of? ›

Commercially available pancake mix (buchim garu, 부침가루) is a pantry staple in Korean homes. The mix is seasoned and typically includes wheat flour and other ingredients such as corn starch, rice flour and sometimes baking powder. Koreans look for a slightly chewy and crispy texture in savory pancakes.

What is Korean pancake made of? ›

Pa jun is made with a batter of flour, eggs, salt, and water. It works as a hearty snack, appetizer, or a side dish for a Korean meal. As with many recipes and dishes, you can tweak it to your taste—many people have their own delicious versions of pa jun.

Why do restaurants put pancake batter in eggs? ›

The aeration in the pancake batter makes the eggs light, tender, and fluffy without adding any obvious flavor, so the egg dish is both hefty and light at the same time. Pancake batter also gives the eggs enough body and structure to hold together over the meaty, cheesy fillings.

What do the four ingredients of pancakes represent? ›

Simple pancake recipe

It might interest you that all four ingredients represent four things of significance at Easter time. Eggs symbolise creation, flour represents the staff of life, salt is wholesomeness, and milk symbolises purity.

How to make pancakes with formula? ›

In a bowl, whisk together 50g plain flour, 1 egg, 1tsp of vegetable oil, and 150ml of milk (formula/breastmilk/cow's milk). Pour the mixture into a pan and fry for 2 minutes on each side until golden brown. On top of the pancake, make a smiley face out of HiPP Organic's Strawberry and Raspberry Yogurt.

How do ingredients affect pancakes? ›

When you mix the flour with eggs and milk, the gluten molecules get more flexible and can bind to each other forming networks. The mixing causes carbon dioxide gas from the air to be trapped by these networks, which causes the pancake to rise (just like bread does) and creates its chewable texture.
